Two Day Streak!

It's been two days since i promised baby Hendrik/Haven and myself to put only the best in our bodies. I'm excited to spend the remainder of my pregnancy and his/her childhood providing not only a good example, but also ensuring that my child has unlimited access to fruit and delectably prepared veggie dishes.

I always felt like the reason kids don't like vegetables is because nobody knows how to prepare vegetables so they taste really good! Nobody puts passion and love into the vegetables that have so much potential to nourish their families. Nobody except raw vegans that is!!! I have eaten some incredibly tasty foods... comprised of nothing but raw unadulterated vegetables, fruits, and spices! Making them just takes a little more effort than pb&js and a little more of a learning curve than making hamburger helper for dinner. There's a lot more uncharted territory when it comes to cooking - or not - with vegetables.

Anyway, it's day two and I am feeling so great! Even though I am in week 14 of my pregnancy and morning sickness is no longer supposed to be debilitating, I've still been throwing up (and not just in the morning). Today, however, I woke up with no nausia at all. I also just feel remarkably clearheaded and happy. I was in such a good mood all day at work too. All thanks to a sudden massive influx in vitamins, minerals, living food, and superior hydration in just one day. I'm excited for how I feel tomorrow after eating this way for 3 days!

Anyhow yesterday for breakfast i had an apple and a banana-frozen-strawberry-oj smoothie. It's literally the best smoothie in all the land. I used to eat A QUART OR MORE of it every day for breakfast. The combination is so good! It should be a staple food for everybody, vegan or raw vegan, because it's just so easy and tasty and filling. And nutritious! Talk about a great way to get your fiber and vitamin c in.

For lunch I ate fruitarian sushi, another favorite of mine back when I ate all raw. I will create a recipe soon.

Dinner was creamy cucumber noodles, recipe once I get at a computer. These so simple. And so good, another all time favorite from when I was raw.

I was hungry just a little later so I also made myself 2 eggs, and black beans wrapped in corn tortilla shell with enchilada sauce. Another win, super good, and a great, healthy way to push in some protien for me and baby (: I've decided to modify the diet from how I used to follow it, to include quality protiens like eggs and legumes.

Today I woke up and had a smoothie for breakfast. Lunch was apples. Here's dinner:

But nom tho!! BBQ shredded carrots! Wrapped in homegrown cabbage leaves with a dill pickle. (: Here's a link to the recipe.http://thegaychickwiththeblog.blogspot.com/2012/03/fresh-creamy-noodle-like-goodness.html?m=1

On My Mind//13

I've posted this link before but I just read it again tonight and I'm in love all over again. Seriously, read this!!

It Has Been A MINUTE!

Wow! It's been a while since I posted. It's been a while since I thought a lot about this part of my life! So much has changed since my last post, where do I start?

I would no longer call myself a vegan, hippie, or child anymore. Let me go on.

I'm pregnant!!! My fetus is 3 months old and I'm starting to show and my life has changed so much since I got pregnant, since I found out, and it's only going to continue to change at a rapid rate with the growth and birth of our child. I wasn't planning on the pregnancy obviously at 18 years old with plans for college but my boyfriend and I are both so excited for him.

I also slipped off the wagon. I began struggling again with eating disorder tendencies last winter and began eating unhealthy food with enthusiasm this past summer. Non fruitarian food is freaking good! Icecream, cookies, french fries, pizza, vegan burgers. There's a reason those foods are pretty much universally loved. My hair thinned considerably this summer though too and I can't help but wonder if that wasn't affected at all by my poor diet in the previous months. Wanna see it somewhere around its worst?

Remember how long and thick and nice it was when I was eating lots of healthy living vegan nutrients!? Let me refresh your memory if not.

Since then I cut most of it off and it's looking thicker and better but it's nowhere near as nice as it used to be.

I've been trying hard to eat healthy and also lots of protiens, but admittedly there are still a lot of bad foods in my diet that shouldn't be there for the sake and health of my future kid. I've been thinking a lot lately about how amazing I felt all the time when i ate all raw vegan. It seems pretty normal to think back to a time in my life when I was healthier and happier than ever, at a time in my life when I wake up feeling like I got punched in the gut by a train every day. And also at a time when I'm making a fragile, impressionable little person in my belly and have greater nutritional requirements than I've ever had before. I really wish to teach my child how to live healthy, happy, and fruitfully too. I've been dreaming of going back to a high fruit diet - obviously though, this time including plenty of healthy fats and protiens due to, well, you know. My little person.

From here out this blog is going to be dedicated to the story and struggles of a 18 year old girl learning about pregnancy and childhood in a whole new way as I relearn the art of raw vegan fruitarian veganism.

Buying Enough Bananas!

Hello! Do you struggle on a raw diet? I have one big tip to share today if you are someone who falls into the large camp of people who want to, but do not know how to accurately execute a raw vegan diet.

A big turning point in my success on a low fat raw vegan diet was when I really learned how to buy fruit like a fruitarian. (Why fruit-based raw veganism is the only way to go!)

These days, we normally try to keep 40+ lbs of fresh bananas in the house, plus maybe 30 (give or take) lbs of frozen bananas in the freezer at all times (we have 2 large chest freezers so this is no problem).

Bananas are very cheap and dense in calories, so they make a pretty obvious staple unless you live in a mango forest or something. (; They are easy to peel and prepare and make the best smoothies - I'm not even a huge fan of plain bananas, but I wouldn't make a smoothie without them! (Here are a few if my favorite smoothie recipes - bad food combining though some may be.)

I normally buy discounted "overripe" nanas Kwiktrip (a gas station in central US). Depending on how many discounted bananas they have - or how few I have at home - we'll buy anywhere from 5 - 40lb at a time. The person at the cash register sometimes doesn't blink an eye. Other times, s/he'll ask if I'm making banana bread....I tell her I make lots of smoothies and she's like, "oh, I see." No big deal. (:

I think a big part of being successful on a low fat raw vegan diet is getting over caring too deeply about what people think. At first, you may feel crazy buying 40lb of bananas at a time. people around you may confirm your feelings either verbally or with shocked looks. But wait!

Ask yourself what's REALLY so crazy about buying loads of bananas? You eat lots of bananas, they make you feel good, etc. You have very good reasons for buying those bananas! What is far more crazy when you think about it, is spending hard earned money on all the junk crap (potato chips, instant meals, little debbies...) you see in every other shopping cart! Who wants to put their resources into stuff that's not doing good things for anyone, and actually makes them feel worse?!

Once you've found a place you like to buy bananas, you can give them your name to a produce manager and suggest they call you if they ever have a large amount of "overripe" bananas. This is good for you and the store! That's a symbiotic relationship! (I think. I had bio last year. We dont talk about symbiosis too much in physics :p).

In conclusion, bananas are awesome and they will make your raw vegan life so much easier! Buy loads of bananas, specifically discounted ones if available. Get to know the people in charge of the fruit. And remember... Going through 4 - 7+lb of bananas per day is not crazy! It's just abnormal. (;

Peace!

Strawberry Ice-Cream Shortcake

Yum! This is so decadent and super simple and healthy - only 4 whole food, raw ingredients!
It would make an excellent Valentines meal or dessert.

There's two parts:

Shortcake:
—30 halawy dates (or 15 medjools)
—¼c dried, unsweetened coconut

Icecream:
—¾c frozen strawberries
—1 banana

Simply blend dates & coconut until a sticky, sweet dough is formed. Press lightly into bowl or dish.

Blend bananas & strawberries with a little bit of water. Pile on top of your shortcake pastry and enjoy!

This recipe makes a nice meal for 1 person, or a good dessert for 2.

Peace!

What A Teenage Fruitarian Eats In A Day

I get people asking me often enough, what and how much they should be eating in a day. I obviously can't answer that 100% - we're all different; only you can answer that by experimenting and finding out what what works for you.

However, I can show you what works for me and what I do, to give you some sort of basic understanding.

So, here is a play-by-play of everything I'm eating today!

Breakfast - smoothie (1L):
—4-5 bananas
—2c OJ
—¾c strawberries (or other berry)
Blend everything until smooth.

I always start my day with a smoothie! I sometimes experiment with different foods for breakfast, but in my experience, a smoothie for breakfast is the best! It's hydrating, flavorful, easy to digest, and full of healthy carbohydrates to fill you up and energize you for the day.

I've found that it's very important to get enough calories in my breakfast meal, and that eating a lot early in the morning provides excellent energy levels and a positive mood for the whole day - plus I'm not hungry all the time for the rest of the day.

This size smoothie normally fills me up until lunch - but some days I'm hungry earlier, so I often bring a small snack of whole fruit or extra smoothie to school with me (it almost always gets eaten up, either before lunch or as a snack in the afternoon).

Snack - extra green smoothie that wouldnt fit in my lunch jar. Aha

Lunch - green smoothie (1L):
—2c romaine
—¼cilantro
—1c water
—½lemon, juiced
—3bananas
—1.5c pineapple
Blend greens with water and lemon until smooth. Add fruit, blend again until smooth.

This is probably my favorite green smoothie! I love pineapple with greens.

For lunch, I normally have either a green smoothie or a monomeal of whole fruit.

I like the fruit monomeal because it is convenient and easy. Recently, my monomeal has been about 10 oranges. There're super easy to transport and don't go bad fast, so it's nice.

I'm out of oranges now, though, so I've been doing green smoothies instead. I really like the way they are sort of savory and sweet at the same time. I think this is awesome for lunch, because you're not looking for something quite as sweet at lunchtime as you had for breakfast, but you still need a good amount of calories to get you through the rest of the day. Making smoothies take a little extra prep time in the morning, but they are also a nice, convenient way to eat at school (or work).

Dinner - 2 heads of broccoli dipped in maybe ½c sundried tomato paste, with ¼ avocado and a sprinkling of curry

This may sound like a wierd meal, but I thought it was super good! Lol, I have really been loving broccoli the past few days! (And, it was on sale at the grocery store, aha.)

I've noticed that at different times, I'll crave different types of greens and fruits. (I normally can't stand broccoli or cruciferous veggies, but I sometimes go through phases of like a week, where I just can't get enough of them. Wtf?) I can't imagine this is anything other than my body telling me what it needs, which I think is pretty cool! ...I used to try and eat the things that I knew were *good* for me....but I've found that I feel and do a lot better when just eating the fruits and veggies I'm wanting to eat at the time.

Previously to my broccoli kick, I was doing a cucumber "pasta" just about every night, with a sauce that differed from day to day. I posted a few of these sauce recipes. Basicalky what I would do, would be blend up a base of about 1c water and 2 - 3c greens, then add spices, herbs, other veggies, to to taste, and see what worked. This was super fun, and made for awesome flavor variey - even when using basically the same base ingredients every day, hah. (:

I like having a savory, green meal for dinner. I often throw in a few dates or some dried fruit to sweeten the meal up. The sweetness helps to satiate better than if it were just a low-calorie green meal. The fact that I eat more carb calories earlier in the day, makes it possible for me to have and enjoy a green/salad-type meal for dinner.

I also had about 2½ cups of water today. I don't force down the water like I know sme raw foodists do. I just drink when I feel I need it. Many days, I don't actually drink water by itself (though I normally blend some with my smoothies), and this seems to work just fine for me.

-----

So, thats my intake for the whole day! Keep in mind that I am a small-boned, 5'2, 100lb female. I don't do huge amounts of excersize, especially being winter - just some walking and about an hour of yoga every night.

So, obviously most people are going to need more food than this. The best way to figure out just how much food you need is to listen to your own body and experiment: there is no one size fits all answer.

If you are just beginning a low fat raw vegan diet, theres a good chance your tummy won't even be able to fit all the food you'll be needing! This is because cooked food is a more concentrated source of calories - a lot of the fiber and water that is present in raw foods is normally removed in cooked food. So it will take some getting used to, just do the best you can - and if you must, don't be afraid to maybe supplement with some rice for dinner, if you must. It's better than not getting enough food, in my opinion!

Hope this was helpful to you!

-Peace!

Before & After II

Hey! I just realized, yesterday was my one-year blogiversary! Exciting day. Haha

In honor of a year passing since my first blogpost... I figure perhaps another before and after is in order.

I honestly haven't changed in weight that much, but I have been getting stronger, losing retained water weight, etc. - also, I think I look significantly healthier now than I did a year ago...or two years ago...or three!

What do you guys think?
This is me! Today! (Actually, that's a lie. It's me, last night, before I went to bed. Haha)
I've been raw vegan for 2 years, and vegan for 3 - and honestly I can't remember feeling better than I do right now! So glad I discovered LFRV.

Oh my goodness! Don't laugh, guys! Haha. This is me almost exactly a year ago! I honestly didn't realize there was such a change!
Well there it is, folks. This is before I removed nuts and oils from my life - and you can see the difference!

And here I am 2 years ago! Haha.
It's almost exactly a week after I went raw, I believe!
Don't be fooled by the relative healthy-looking-ness.
I was pretty much starving myself at this point,, and I had loads of makeup on.

..That's all I've got for ya today! Peace!

Banana-nog!

YUM! So it turns out even raw vegans can sip eggnog by the fireside this holiday season! (And anybody else can have a nutritious, guilt-free version of this favorite holiday drink!) Just made this for breakfast this morning, it really does taste pretty eggnog-y. (And yummy!)

It's super easy to make:
—2 bananas, chunked
—2 frozen bananas, chunked
—1c coconut milk (or, if you're staying overt-free, coconut water would probably be good as well)
—½ tsp cinnamon (or more, to taste)
—dash nutmeg (to taste)

Throw everything in the blender and blend away until it's smooth and creamy...then pour into your favorite mason jar and enjoy!

Curry-Ginger-Lime Soup

Tonight, I got to make dinner for the fam - and of course I wanted to give the people I love something yummy that would also nourish them, like all food should.

Well. Dad didn't want to be adventurous and Joe wasn't hungry - so I actually just made dinner for Mom and I... but she loved it! (And so did I.)

Tonight, we dined upon a delicious Curry-Ginger-Lime Soup!

If you're craving a savory, flavorful, creamy, warm raw soup yourself, give this one a try!

The ingredients are as follows:

  • 1 endive
  • 2 c lettuce (I used romaine)
  • 1 c warm water
  • 2 Tbs fresh ginger
  • 2 Tbs lime juice
  • 1 tsp curry
  • ½ avocado
  • ½ cucumber
  • 10 small dates (or 5 large)
I know, it's kind of a lot of ingredients. But it sure is good!

It's very easy to make, too - no worries!
  1. Chop dates and cucumber into small-ish chunks.
  2. Blend romaine & endive with warm water until smooth.
  3. Add ginger, lime, and curry. Blend again, just until mixed.
  4. Add avocado. Blend one last time.
  5. Pour into a bowl, mix in dates and cucumber, and enjoy!
Yum!

Healthy Appetite Again!

So I have a story to share, I haven't talked about this much before.

Like most girls of my generation, I once upon a time had an eating disorder. I actually don't know when it started for me. I faintly remember worrying that I was too fat before I was even in school. I think maybe it stemmed from the fact that Daddy spoke badly of fat people on occasion... People would always tell me I was skinny/tiny, even when I was little, but for whatever reason, I didn't believe them. Anyhow, psychoanalyzing that is a job for someone like Sigmund Freud, not a 16 year old who's been in her first psychology class for about 20 days. 'Cause I'm just guessin'. Aha.

Anyhow, I remember being like 10 years old, and I would eat more than I needed. I wouldn't really be hungry - I just loved the taste of bagels and Ritz crackers!

In 5th grade, I visited France on foreign exchange; I was there for about 3 weeks, and spent  the last half frightened that I had gained weight eating all of this rich, probably unhealthy, french food. And I didn't have a scale to make sure I hadn't gotten fat! Not kidding. 5th grade.

In 6th, I went on my first diet.

In 7th was when the eating disorder started, officially, I think. I started eating like 200calories per day, pro-ana sites, the works.

In 8th grade, I started going through binge-starve phases. At times I would decide I wanted to get better, but at the time I didn't really know how to do it, and I was still super afraid of gaining weight... So even though I tried not to care and just "listen to my body", it had me eating crazy amounts of food (to make up for starving at other times), I puffed up to my highest weight of 114. (It doesn't sound that bad...for whatever reason, I'm lucky enough my weight actually has never fluctuated horribly.)

Around 9th grade, bulimia started as well.

Throughout all this, I was slowly working my way through veganism, gourmet raw veganism, and fruitarianism.

Recently, I came to a place where I really feel like I understand food and what I'm eating. I understand what my body needs, and no longer feel like its a fight.

I've been raw for almost two years now, and I finally feel like my appetite has returned to normal. Like, normal normal healthy healthy. I eat when I'm hungry, and I don't eat when I'm not. The food I'm eating feels good in my body, and I don't regret what I'm eating.

I feel like I've reached equilibrium. I think a lot of this long-sought-after peace is thanks to my raw vegan fruitarian diet, and I feel so lucky that I found the diet and had the strength and resolve to stick with it this long.

I can't explain exactly what the diet has done for me, I don't think someone who hasn't experienced it could understand. But I feel more confident, I feel more mature, I feel more empathetic, I feel more in tune with my body, I am able to feel emotions more purely and strongly, I feel capable of truly loving, I feel more positive, I feel more at peace, I feel stronger, I feel more independent, I feel better.

And I can't imagine why anybody wouldn't want to live this way. And lucky you, now that you've heard about LFRV, you have the opportunity to make it yours, too.

Valuable Beginner Tips!

•young people (under 20) don't be afraid to eat a little extra fat (between 10 - 20%, probably-ish)

•get fats from fruits (avo is best from experience) rather than nuts & seeds

•surround yourself with fruit that you love!

• don't be afraid of overreating! (eat as much as you desire, that's the beauty)

•eat enough! Dont end up one of those people who decides veganism made them sick, emaciated and tired all the time - that was you under relating cause you're not used to the light caloric density of whole plant-based carbohydrate. (ideally fruit)

•if you're craving salt, eat greens. As many greens as you desire (try fruit-based dressings, no oil)

•it's not an all or nothing thing. Almost all raw foodists eat cooked sometimes. (not naming specific people, but I have heard from close friends of some big raw names, that they occasionally eat cooked; a few others like durian rider & Fredric patenaud are open about it. (i personally drink pasteurized not-from-concentrate oj, and will have marinara sauce sometimes) you do eat some cooked it's ok, just keep it high raw, always keep it vegan (although if you don't think you can do that even, then obviously mostly vegan is better than not at all), and try to keep cooked foods whole and carb-rich as much as you can.

•do what is right for you! Every step in the right direction is better than where you started, if you don't think your ready for something, that's fine. Don't push yourself and end up giving up and going back to SAD.

•educate yourself! Watch earthings, read 80-10-10 - if you know exactly why youre doing this, you'll obviously be more likely to stick with it.

•try smoothies! I'm personally not a big fan, but I know lots of people love smoothies and it enables them to get lots more fruit in, and even positively share part of this diet with those around them, and that's excellent.

•start paying attention to just how you feel after eating things, emotionally, mentally and physically. Rather than following diet dogma, listen to your body. As your body becomes more accustomed to a whole food, raw, plant-based diet, your body will become better and better at sending you signals - and it'll get more and more natural for you to pick up on them.

Starting A Fruitarian Diet

[updated!]

Thinking maybe you'd like to try out fruitarianism? I highly recommend it. It'll be so good for you - your health, your weight, your self esteem, your karma.... Just everything.

However, it's not super easy when you're starting out. Especially for those who are used to a SAD. So, since success is the goal, I wanna offer some tips and tidbits for any beginners out there - as well as my congratulations and wish that it all goes really well for you and you realize how amazing the diet is!

1) Transition period! Though it's absolutely possible to switch straight from SAD to fruitarian, it is going to be significantly harder. Switching to vegan, raw vegan, or frugan are all transitional options that will make it easier to switch over into 100% fruitarianism. Veganism is, of course, when one eats only food products produced by plants. Raw veganism is the same, only followers of this diet do not cook their food. This would be one step closer to fruitariansim than cooked veganism, but the follower will still eat nuts and heavier veggies and things - which the body is used to from the SAD. Fruganism is another option, where the diet consists of only fruit, but fruit can be eaten cooked or raw, whatever.
Personally, I arrived at fruitarianism over several years (my story is available here if you're curious or interested). At first, I was vegan, a year later I switched to raw veganism, and a year later, here I am - fruitarian. Obviously a year isn't necessary in between everything, it was just a natural progression for me.
Though I arrived here by following the veganism path, looking back I must say now I think I actually would recommend fruganism as a transitional diet over vegan or raw veganism, though they are all good options, each healthier than the last.

2) Always have plenty of raw, fresh fruit around! If you get hungry, you will be tempted to indulge in other, less healthy options! Also, always make sure you're eating enough raw, fresh fruit! That means eating until you are full! I know that there are people who start a diet like this with the goal of losing weight. Don't worry, you will lose weight, I promise! Eat as much fruit as you like - check out this young lady who lost significant amounts of weight on about 3,000cals of fruit a day!
Think of it this way. If you eat plenty of fruit, you are eating what your body wants, it is naturally able to deal with it, and for whatever reason our bodies naturally return to their optimal shape and weight on pure fruit. However, if we try to interfere with this process by cutting calories, ect, our body starts to think it's starving. Which leads to binging. And the body, trying to protect us, puts on as much extra fat as it can, to protect us for the next time this happens.
So, moral of the story is - learn to appreciate what your body is trying to do for you, and then stop fighting it. Just show your body that it no longer needs to worry about not getting enough nutrients, so instead of trying to store them - it can focus on making you the healthiest, happiest, most attractive person you can be.

3) Detox. This is just something to be aware of. In the years that you have spent on SAD, your body has built up toxins. Probably grossly large amounts of toxins, that it was unable to ever clear out entirely, becasue more and more kept being piled on top of old ones... and it just turned into a huge mess. Now that you are starting out eating just fresh, cleansing, easy-to-digest fruit, your body can finally get rid of all the toxins that have been weighing you down and slowly killing you and making you miserable for years. These toxins will be being pulled from your fat stores and things, and into your bloodstream to be discarded as waste.
Since all these toxins are going to be interracting with your body, you are definately going to feel it. Headaches, sickeness... I dunno, it wasn't that bad for me 'cause I've been working my way here ever so slowly since I was 12. But chances are, you will feel it. And you'll be miserable. I'm really not trying to scare you away; that's the last thing I want to do; I just want you to understand that what is causing the discomfort is not this new diet, but your old one, all the problems that have built up because of it. It's hard work, getting rid of that shiit. Don't be too quick to blame it on the one thing that can make you better.
Depending upon your level of toxicity, this detox could really last from a week to to half a year - with incredibly varied degrees of discomfort. Just know that when you pull through and you're on the other side - no matter how much detox sucks, I swear on anything that it will really, absolutely be worth it.

4) You will probably be hungry. Super, super, insatiably hungry at first. For the first week or two, maybe a month. Your body is used to having heavy foods. A 'lump' in your stomach. Fresh fruit, with it's high water content will not do this. Again, don't hold back. Eat and eat and eat, as much fruit as you want - until you feel like you don't need more food. The feeling will go away eventually, your body gets used to the fruits. Eating this way becomes the only way. That lump becomes an evil, weird, foreign thing. I promise. And that's the way it's s'posed to be.

5) Have as much variety in your fruit as you can get. You don't want to get bored. There is a lot you can do with fruits, by way of mixing them; especially veggie fruits. (I have a link to some of my favorite recipes in the upper right corner), and there are just an abundance of different and exciting options when if comes to fruit out there. But it really sucks, and can be really hard - again, especially at frist - when you don't have a lot of options, or all you have to pick from is an apple and an orange, while there are SO many different cooked food options you could be choosing from.

6) When I first went fruitarian, I was definitely eating too many avocados and olive oil. Having so much fat in my diet made me feel pretty fatigued, sluggish, and foggy. If a high-fat diet is sustained, it can lead to some real, serious problems down the road - even if you're getting the fat from "good" sources. Stay away from oils entirely. It's okay to have an avocado everyone in a while, but don't make a habit of it. Definitely focus on sweet, juicy fruits.

7) Make sure you're staying hydrated. You may or may not still have to drink water on this diet (depending upon what kinds of fruits you are eating and climate). In my opinion, the best way to judge this is to make sure your pee is clear every time you go to the bathroom. If it is at all yellow-tinted, you need to drink some water right away, you are getting dehydrated.

That's all I've got for now, I will add more if I think of anything - but for now, good luck, I really truly wish you the best! You're gonna love it!

Thinking About Trying Fruitarianism?

These are just a few tips that I have for... Really, anybody. Specifically, those thinking about starting a fruitarian, frugivorous, raw vegan, frugan, vegan, or vegetarian diet!

Greens. My diet does consist of some greens, though ethically I don't feel that this is ideal. Obviously I would prefer to be eating nothing but freely given fruit - however, there are no 100% fruitarians in nature, and minerals tend to be much more abundant in vegetables - so, I believe that for optimal health, one must eat some veggies, the best being delicate leafy greens like lettuce (try to stay away from cruciferous and root veggies, they are harder on digestion). To stay as ethical as possible (if this is your goal) always make sure to only take what you need without killing the plant - for me it is an important difference, between taking what I need and killing.
I don't eat things like seeds, nuts, grains, spouts, and root veggies - as it is necessary to take the life of a plant in order to eat any of these. These are not ideal foods for humans, at any rate, so I advise that everybody stay away from them.

Eating enough. Another important thing is to eat enough! Fresh fruits have high water content, so it will seem like you are eating much more, but you actually won't even be getting ENOUGH calories! At first you will want to make an account on a website like Cron-O-Meter that will track your calories and nutrition daily... Make sure you are getting AT LEAST 2,500 calories every day to fuel a healthy, exciting, adventurous lifestyle!

High carb, low fat!
This is the healthiest diet! Try to keep your carbs:protien:fat ratio to 80:10:10. Fresh fruits and veggies will supply this ratio very well, but try not to eat too much avocado or durian. Carbs fuel your body and give you energy and happiness (in addition, carbs never make you fat! Even if you did over eat on carbs...which is all but impossible...the excess carbs would be burned off as excess heat.) Too much fat or protein in your diet will make you feel less than your best, and lead to serious, degenerative diseases like diabetes or colon cancer in the long term. Though they can be enjoyed in moderation, try to keep from eating too much of fatty fruits like avocado and durian.

Stay away from cooked food!
Did you know that when you eat cooked food, your body reacts to it as a pathogen? That doesn't sound very healthful, right? It's not! When we cook food, carbohydrates carmellize, proteins denature, and fats carcinogize, producing compounds like acrymalide, which has been proven to cause cancer in mammals. In addition, most other nutrients are destroyed with heat, meaning that you are basically just eating empty calories - no wonder cooked meals leave don't leave you energized and invigorated!
(As a side note, if you must eat cooked foods, try to eat them steamed, as for some reason, studies show that this has the least carcinogenic effect on foods.)

Follow these tips and your diet will provide you with everything you need, in terms of nutrition! If you choose to follow this path, you are about to reach a whole new level of amazing, vibrant health, and you are just going to want to shout it to the world, 'cause its that great. (;

Good luck on your journey, and for sure feel free to leave a comment or send me over an email at ktms_96@yahoo.com, I'd love to provide whatever support or guidance you might need.
Or, feel free to just search my blog... I'm pretty sure I have some useful stuff in there (though a lot of it is also outdated, back from when I was eating high-fat.)

Wishing you all peace, love, fruit, and loads of sunshine! ☼

Youtube Videos!

So, my friend has recently jumped on board with veganism, and of course we have every reason to be thrilled!

Remember:

In addition, it's certainly worth remembering that by eating vegan you are also declining to support an industry that enslaves and murders millions of animals in a single day.

Anyhow, after learning of all this, Brittany was convinced - and not only that! She's feeling very passionate about her decision! So, we were inspired to begin a YouTube series documenting her progress and experiences as/becoming a vegan, as well as discussing some important tips for succeeding on a vegan diet, as well as going in depth on why we should all work towards being vegan ourselves!
This series will be exceptionally nice for you if you love learning about the raw, vegan, fruitarian, 80-10-10, or any other diets of the sort - as we plan to (at least briefly) cover them all!

In addition, these videos are seriously just going to be a lot of fun! We both have a lot of personality, and a lot to say... And I'm sure this is going to shine through in these videos! (Can you tell I'm a little excited? Haha.)

This is our first video. It just discusses the reasons that Brittany chose to go vegan!

Second video, Brittany's first mono fruit meal! She discusses some of the simple reasons that mono meals, if possible, are always the best!

There will be more coming! And they'll be posted here - if you're interested, subscribe on here or on YouTube, and have an amazing, fruit-filled day!

Science Says: We Are Frugivores.

Recently, I've been reading up on the scientific side of my diet. I thought maybe I'd share some of this stuff with you guys, because it's kinda information that we really all should know.

Science Verifys That Humans Are Frugivores - a detailed description of the anatomy of us, vs. frugivores, carnivores, and herbivores

The Science Of Raw Food - there is a LOT of reading material here, but it's all good, solid information; a good part of it from accredited scientists, doctors, etc. If you're serious about learning about your diet, visit this website.

Are We Vegetarians Or Fruitarians - this is actually from the above website; talks about how fruits are the only nutritionally appropriate food for humans, and why. Also has a simple and easy to understand chart detailing anatomical differences between humans, frugivores, herbivores, and carnivores, and omnivores

The Milk Letter: A Message To My Patients - this isn't actually about fruitarianism at all, just milk. But it's super informative, and unbiased, too, actually. It's also by a doctor, by the way.

I'll definitely add more as I come across more, too! This is just the ones I've read recently that I really liked.

Changed My Blog, Changed My Mind!

Today, I was in Madison, doing some shopping for expensive healthy/delicious food that I figured it was okay to splurge on... even though I'm on a budget - Saturday's my birthday after all! Haha, anyhow, I was at Whole Foods Market eating a lovely salad consisting of greens, tomatoes, parsley, sweet corn, and a little bit of garlic (I don't know how I feel about that. I will do some reflecting in the next few days and decide. Haha), when I realized something.

I really enjoy eating vegetables. I've found that at times I feel compelled to eat greens, plain - just as I would fruit. Moreover, I have been doing significant amounts of reading in the past weeks from accredited scientists and anthropologists who do indeed support the theory that humans certainly are designed to bem, and naturally are, frugivores. (I'll try to remember to post some links in the near future!) However, I am aware that there are no perfect fruitarians in nature - frugivores eat mainly fruit, but also indulge in leaves and succulant vegetables when they feel the need.

While fruits are an excellent source of minerals, vegetative matter such as greens contain a much better supply of some necessary vitamins.

I still do believe that fruit is certainly the optimal diet for humans, being frugivores, and should certainly make up the majority of a person's diet. However, I no longer wish to advocate a 100% fruit diet for health reasons. Spiritually... maybe in future I will continue down the road of 100% fruit. But I am done decieving myself into believing that it is the most healthful thing to eat just fruits.

At this point, I am officially chosing to willingly partake in the ingestion of vegetative matter, that does not *kill* the plant. This will include things like greens (though perhaps not baby greens), broccoli, ...I can't think of anything else right now. Haha. I will continue abstaining from eating things that directly cause the death of the plant, such as modified-stem vegetables like kohlrabi or potatoes, or root veggies like beet and carrots.

Since I have made this decision, it would be a lie to continue titling my blog, "I Was A Teenage Fruitarian", so, I have changed it to "Embracing My Inner Frugivore" - because I continue to believe that we are all designed to eat a raw, fresh, frugivorous diet, just like our early ancestors and the members of the ape family that science tells us we evolved from.

As I have said before: As I have done now, I change my views on diet and what is healthy and good for me all the time, based on new experiences and information made available to me. The things I advocate are certainly the things I believe in at the time - but I am a 15 year old girl, I'm certainly not a scientist. While I have to assume my beliefs are pretty close to right (haha), I'm certainly not 100% correct, and not qualified to be a solid resource. However, I certainly invite you to do more research on your own to verify my assertions.

Eat fruit (and greens, haha), be healthy, be happy! G'day to you.
